Let’s discuss three of the most common podcasting fallacies and blunders and how to prevent them while starting your program.
You intend to launch a podcast, then. Podcasting has so much promise, but there are several ways to screw it up. Today, I want to discuss how to avoid three of the major pitfalls that could prevent you from being a successful podcaster.
Let’s be real here. Your brand-new podcast’s initial episodes will probably not be that fantastic. However, it would help if you first navigated the muck to reach the nice stuff.
As you heard on SPI 546 last Friday, Pat’s debut episode of the SPI Podcast was a complete failure.
His third attempt resulted in the episode’s final form. He caught the first person conversing spontaneously on tape. He tried scripting the entire event because he didn’t like that. That also failed to succeed. On his third attempt, he finally produced something serviceable. What’s up with that music, though? Woof.)
All this is to say, start with something terrible and get better. It cannot be avoided.
You might shudder when you listen back to your first few podcast broadcasts. But the more consistently and frequently you practice, the better you’ll get.

I didn’t do a great job interviewing John Vuong for the first episode of Flops, so I had to go back and rerecord some of our conversation (thanks, John!).
But as the season went on, I improved. I didn’t become the best interviewer in the world, but I did get better. Likewise, you will.
It could be challenging to accept this, especially if you’re a perfectionist. However, as soon as you do, you’ll be on your way to a lucrative podcasting career.
Therefore, release your pilot without hesitation, even though they could stink.
Consider that you work in a relatively tiny niche. What if you are concerned that your podcast won’t be successful because your Audience is too small?
You want the biggest audience possible when you make a podcast.
Consider Phil Lichtenberger, who produces the famous podcast Scanner School in a specialized market—the handheld radio hobby.
Phil started the podcast because he was passionate about his hobby and wanted to interact with other enthusiasts. And what do you know now? Superfans of his are folks who watch every live broadcast and listen to every podcast episode. Companies are getting in touch with him. All that despite producing a program for a particular Audience.
What if, though, you have observed numerous podcasts in your specialized field come and go and are concerned that there isn’t an adequate need for a program like yours?
This is the key. It doesn’t always follow that your podcast will lose listenership just because others in your niche have.
Committing is the most vital thing. Choose a subject that will energize you and inspire you to produce a podcast.
You must commit three times. It is the first piece of advice in our How to Start a Podcast guide for a reason.
You might also be concerned that you’re too late to the game and that podcasting has gotten “too popular” now.
Let me provide some data to help you understand why that is unquestionably untrue.
Over 500 million blogs are now active. Over 50 million active YouTube channels are available.
What number of podcasts exist? Two million or so. I’m done now.
This medium still has a lot of room to develop. The rest of the 2020s will likely see podcasting grow significantly and quickly if blogging and internet video are indications.
You can still participate in the podcasting boom.
Okay. Perhaps you’re ready to concede that podcasting still has room to develop. But what if there already appears to be a lot of competition for the show you want to produce?
There may be another program like it already on the air. Therefore there’s no point in making one and you may be thinking. Best software for sales funnel.
Just keep in mind that there are methods to stand out even in what can seem to be a busy area.
